If you have ever seen someone undergoing an electrocardiogram (EKG) test on TV or elsewhere, it might look a little intimidating to have a whole bunch of wires attached to you! However, it is an entirely uncomplicated test. EKGs are an excellent resource for keeping tabs on your heart health. We are delighted to offer fantastic EKG services at Coronado Bay Urgent Care at an affordable price.
How do EKGs work?
Electrocardiograms measure the electrical activity of a person’s heartbeat. An individual heartbeat sends a wave through the heart that causes the heart muscle to contract and pump blood through your body’s veins. EKGs register this wave as an electrical impulse on a portable computer screen. The EKG reading is accomplished through ten electrodes with adhesive skin pads placed on your chest, arms, and legs. When your heart beats, the wave passes through the electrodes and is registered by the EKG.
The process is entirely painless and minimally invasive. If you have any chest hair, some may need to be shaved off to register an accurate reading. During the EKG test, you will lie flat while the doctor analyzes the EKG reading. The entire process, including attaching the electrodes and measuring your heartbeat, should not take more than ten minutes.
Before having an electrocardiogram test performed, it is best to avoid applying oily lotions, as they can cause difficulty when applying the adhesive pad. Also, wear a shirt that can easily be removed so that the electrodes can be placed on your chest, and avoid wearing hosiery.
What are EKGs used for?

- Heart arrhythmias
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart attacks, either past or present
- Abnormalities, such as high potassium or calcium levels, as well as insufficient calcium levels
- Ischemia, which is characterized by poor blood flow to the heart muscle
If you are experiencing any of the following difficulties, consider making an appointment for electrocardiogram services:
- Chest pain
- Confusion, dizziness, or light-headedness
- Fatigue or weakness leading to problems with exercise
